BMW 740i
BMW 740i was introduced in 1992 as an entry-level 7 series and it was offered in standard wheel base as well as stretched “L” version.
History of 740i
BMW 7 Series was a full-size luxury vehicle that was produced by German automakers in 1977. E32 was one of the models of 7 series introduced in 1987, with 730i and 735i featuring inline-6 engines.

In 1992, BMW E32 added two more models to its line up, with 730i and 740i featuring 3.0-liter and 4.0-liter V8 engines respectively. The extended version of both models had 10 cm extra legroom for rear passengers.
1992-1994 740i

Both 740i and 740iL were powered by a 4.0-L 32-valve DOHC V8 engine, which delivered 282 hp (210kW) at 5800 rpm and 300 lb-ft (400Nm) of torque at 4500 rpm, paired with 5-speed automatic transmission. These models were exclusively produced in Europe from 1992 to 1996.
More wood for the interior, upgraded stereo, and Z-rated tires were the few changes in 1994.

1995-1996 740i
In 1995, the bigger Bimmer featured lengthened wheelbase, sleek styling, interior refinements included 14-way power seats and residual heat system (added to continue to give the heat to the vehicle after the power had been turned off).

BMW’s flagships got stretched in 1996 and were offered in long-wheel base models. It received an increased displacement i.e. larger V8 that drastically improved the torque. A sophisticated interior-motion theft-deterrent system was also added.
A larger 4.4-L V8 engine delivered 282 hp at 5700 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque at 3900 rpm. Moreover, the 4200 pounds vehicle went from 0-60 mph sprint in less than 7 seconds.
1997-2000 740i
BMW reintroduced the regular wheelbase 740i after the uproar caused over the termination of the same in 1996. With the return of 740i, BMW 7 series offered variety of features to compete not only with the Jaguars, and Mercedes, but also with the merely large Infiniti Q45 and Lexus LS 400.

In 1998, BMW designed dynamic stability control to automatically correct the yaw on 740i models, preventing plowing and fishtailing.
The Premium package was made standard on the 2000 edition of 740i; a new “Protection” trim level is added, which comes with run-flat tires, bullet-resistant glass, and light armor.
The vehicle is offered amazing relaxation with its 16-way front comfy seats, and the premium package included xenon headlights, premium audio system as well as navigation system.
2001 740i Models
2001 740i received an integrated Motorola StarTac cell phone, body-colored rocker panels, enhanced exterior look as well as sport packages on 740iL.

The EPA-fuel economy ratings of the 2001 sedan were 15 mpg in city and 22 mpg on highways.
2002 BMW 7 Series models were completely redesigned in 2002 that had drooped 740i versions.
2011-2012 740i (Present)
For the first time in nearly twenty years, the new 2011 series receives a 6-cylinder engine. BMW also adds updated version of 740i and 740iL editions.
2011 740i and 740iL editions are equipped with a 3.0-L twin-turbo inline-six engine that spins out 315 hp at 5800 rpm and torsion of about 330 lb-ft at 1600 rpm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In performance testing, it went from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds and achieved 17 mpg city/25 hwy mpg.
The MSRP of 2011 740i is tagged at $70,650.
2012 740i BMW sees no changes from 2011 model year and is expected to be priced more or less same as 2011 740i.
